Flames Alumni VS SCHS Fundraiser

The Calgary Flames Alumni faced off against grade 12 students from Springbank Community High School in the 16th Annual Chase Hudye Scholarship hockey game with proceeds going to The Mustard Seed and the Chase Hudye Scholarship Fund. The game took place on Friday, December 14th 2018 at the Springbank Arena.

The game was initiated 16 years ago by Graham McDonald, son of Lanny McDonald, who wanted to rally his fellow students to assist with the challenges facing less fortunate Calgarians. In 2012, Chase Hudye, a former student at Springbank High School, was tragically killed in an automobile accident. He was a student for three years in the Hockey Canada Skills academy and loved playing for Springbank Minor Hockey. A scholarship was started in his name and the charitable hockey game was re-titled in his memory. Each year, a $500 commitment is made to the scholarship fund through donations collected at this charitable event.

This original initiative started with students creating packages with the basic necessities. This has since transformed into classes competing to see who can collect the most essentials such as socks, deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes. The school averages 300-500 packages per year bringing the grand total to 6,400 packages to Calgarians in need since inception. Students and their families can also donate financially upon entrance to the game.

The star studded Flames alumni line-up included Lanny McDonald, Colin Patterson, Cory Sarich, Mike Commodore, Curtis Glencross, Brendan Morrison and Jim Peplinski.

Thank you to SCHS teacher and organizer, Ioan Matthews and student/player Tyler Wallace.
